Arelion and Infinera partner to upgrade network

Arelion and Infinera announced that Arelion has seamlessly upgraded its existing Infinera FlexILS flexible grid line system to support l-band on a high-traffic route from Ashburn, Virginia to Atlanta. This upgrade doubles the capacity of each fibre pair and marks Arelion's first route with active l-band capacity in the service. With long-haul fibre undersupplied in many parts of the continent, Arelion can now bring more capacity to the market, helping Arelion to continue to meet the capacity needs of its service providers, content providers and enterprise customers.
Arelion is already seeing significant customer demand for terabit-class bandwidth between the booming tech hubs of Ashburn and Atlanta. This l-band deployment demonstrates Arelion's continued innovation to improve the quality and efficiency of its existing network, resulting in cost benefits for its customers. Additional l-band deployments are planned for high traffic routes in North America later this year.
Infinera FlexILS is the industry's most widely deployed flexible grid-compatible open fibre route system with C+ l-band support and colourless, non-directional and non-controversial ROADM. this open network innovation enables operators to eliminate vendor lock-in, manage supply chain changes and easily manage local and exotic wavelengths with granularity control. The system enhances flexibility by supporting programmable configurations that optimise operations based on performance, spectral efficiency, large span reach and fibre conditions. Infinera FlexILS seamlessly doubles the fibre capacity of adjacent c-bands through l-band expansion without compromising service or operational quality.
Georgios Tologlou, Senior Network Architect at Arelion, said: "With the rapid growth of these technology centres, we are seeing great demand from our customers for additional capacity on this high-traffic route. This innovation makes a strong business case for optimising our cost per bit and minimising our operating expenses. Using l-band, we can maximise capacity per fibre pair to quickly meet customer demand and accelerate our sales growth on one of the most popular routes in our North American network."
Ron Johnson, General Manager of Infinera's Optical Systems and Network Solutions Group, said, "Our platform is specifically designed to enable seamless upgrades to provide maximum investment protection and enable our customers to meet growing bandwidth demands. Expanding the network to support l-band doubles the spectrum available to carry optical signals, enabling Arelion to double the amount of service delivered per fibre, while simplifying the network through automation and flexible operation."
This new capability provides enhanced scalability and fast delivery for Arelion's customers, including its number one ranked Internet backbone AS1299, and a portfolio of global carrier-leading IP and optical technology services, including high-speed wavelengths, IP transport, cloud connectivity and Ethernet services for service providers, content providers and enterprises.
